Aging...Opportunity or Problem?

FACT: In 2000, 25,740 persons 60 years of age or older lived in Durham County (12.5% of the total population- 203,295). By 2020 that figure is expected to increase by 80.5%, to 46,458 (18% of the population- 256,661). Total population is expected to increase by only 26%.

FACT: In 2010, the oldest of the large baby boom generation celebrated their 65th birthday. These boomers were the first wave of more than 2 million North Carolinians born between 1946 and 1964, who today represent nearly a third of NC population.

FACT: By 2030, there will be about 70 million older persons, more than twice their number in 1999. People 65+ will represent almost 13% of the population in the year 2000 but are expected to grow to be 20% of the population by 2030.
